Old Sturbridge Village has both feet firmly planted in the 19th century in New England. You'll experience the dawn of prosperity and modern commerce and what life in a village typical of New England at the time. Playing the role of staff in period costume recreate authentic discussions and demonstrations of ideas and skills found in this fascinating era in American history.
Once described in a 1950 article as "The city wants to be updated," Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts is a charming recreated village of early 19th century New England. The Village opened to the public in 1946 and has received 5,000 visitors in its first year of operation. Today, nearly half a million visitors a year to experience the authentic buildings and wonderful collections of artifacts screen.
OSV has been a survivor. New England Weather and accidents can be devastating for open-air museums and Old Sturbridge Village seen blizzards, hurricanes, floods, and the occasional fire. Look for the high water mark on Gristmill serrated on the pond of Hurricane Diane.
Located 60 miles west of Boston off exit 9 on Route 90, Sturbridge Village is located on 200 acres of rural Central Massachusetts. Many of structures are original and transferred from villages in Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Rebuilt and restored with meticulous care, they Tingle your senses with its rustic charm, designs Yankee simple.
Unpaved roads will take you to the municipalities and outlying areas invite barns and craft establishments, such as shoe stores and tin. Here, you'll see and talk to role play craftsmen 19th century. Marvel as they skillfully produce goods using only the tools and resources available in the 1830s. Take the opportunity to discuss with them their skill and their work and what they think about life – just remember their answer will be the point of view of the 19th century.
The both a museum and educational resource, Old Sturbridge Village is primarily a place of exploration for all ages. The centerpiece is the recreated New England city and outlying areas with more than 40 buildings to visit, experience and enjoy.
Sturbridge Village contains residential housing, a print shop, a bank, and shops and businesses. You'll learn why banks did not offer personal loans in these days — but did. And why buildings called Meetinghouse, were not called churches – even if, every Sunday, most villagers spent four hours to worship in them.
Stop by the Salem household in their beautiful house Towne, then visit and tea at the rectory before calling Fenno Fitch and homes. These houses on the town at Sturbridge Village are full of surprises and simple comfort. And they are always open and welcoming to you.
And if you need to stop for refreshments, Sturbridge Village has plenty picnic if you brought your own food, or you can buy hot and cold Fare at Bullard Tavern, or treats at Little Cakes. Dining options vary with the seasons so be sure to check the guide on the day your visit.
The vision of the founders of Old Sturbridge Village was a place to learn through practice and direct experience – an asset to Outside the museum. I always found Sturbridge Village, a change of pace and a reminder that the quality of life has nothing to do with the last widescreen TV or iPod.
Allow at least 3-4 pleasant hours at Old Sturbridge Village. Remember a ticket to Sturbridge Village is good for two days over a period of 10 days.
Old Sturbridge Village is one of my favorite three living museums in New England. The other two are Plimoth Plymouth Plantation in eastern Massachusetts, and Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut.
