2006 Toronto Blue Jays Preview

2005 Overview:
Nobody expected much of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2005. But, surprisingly, all before the break the Toronto pitching star managed to remain in the American League Top 10, while they beat ranked 5th overall in the AL with a collective average, 268 staff. Unfortunately for Toronto it was all downhill from there as they slipped to a disappointing final 80-82 record and fell 15 games the Red Sox and Yankees end their season in 3rd place.
Toronto outfielder Vernon Wells (, 269 28 97) has provided most of the power numbers for the Blue Jays in 2005 with former Arizona Diamondback and newly acquired Shea Hillenbrand (.291 17 82) assisting with time split between the 1st and 3rd base. The rest of the infield produced much of the offensive team in 2005, including 2nd baseman Orlando Hudson (, 315 10 63) and the 3rd goal of turning 1st baseman Eric Hinske (, 262 15 68). Launcher Starting Roy Halladay (12-4 2.41) was clearly the star of the pitching staff to start before having suffered a broken left leg in early July. And closer Miguel Batista kept the Blue Jays in the race during the first half compiling a 4-2 record before the break impressive of all the star with 15 saves. However, Batista was just not the pitcher in the 2nd half of the year, despite 16 saves. After break all the stars Batista just posted a record of 1-6 with a less then stellar 5.35 ERA. Starter Josh Towers (13-12 3.71), Gustavo Chacin (13-9 3.72) and Ted Lilly (10-11 5.56) contributed in 2005 to maintain the admirable efforts of pitching.
Off Season Moves:
To the delight of fans in Toronto took two shots off season aggressively to improve their pitching staff for 2006. The first was the signing of free agent and former Oriole Baltimore by BJ Ryan (1-4 2.43 36 saves in 41 opportunities)) and the other was profiting from the sale of the Florida Marlins by the fire by adding starting pitcher AJ Burnett (12-12 3.44). The Blue Jays have also added offensive punch by trading pitcher Dave Bush to the 1st baseman Lyle Overbay (, 276 19 72) and trading Orlando Hudson out and strengthening Slugger Miguel Batista for Troy Glaus (, 258 37 97).
2006 Analysis:
The Blue Jays will jump out of the door a very strong team pitching in 2006. Expect to Roy Halladay, AJ Burnett, Ted Lilly and Gustavo Chacin to form an impressive starting rotation. Burnett slope over 200 rounds in Florida last season then it will prove to be a nice complement to the Blue Jays. The acquisition of more near Oriole BJ Ryan on spotty Miguel Batista will be a great improvement in the bullpen. Troy Glaus will finally provide some much needed protection for Slugger probably with leftfield Reed Johnson (, 269 8 58) and rightfielder Alex Rios (, 262 10 59) completing the rest of the lineup in Toronto. If the starting pitching can stand, and bats can remain productive until the Blue Jays to keep interesting summer in 2006.
