Not only are New Yorkers, but most people in the United States, and fans of basketball in the world, need no introduction Knicks in New York. For those who do not need to know, the New York Knicks are a team of basketball based on the greatest basketball arena in the world — Madison Square Garden. With the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks – known as the Knicks – are the only two remaining founding members of the National Basketball Association (NBA), which remain based in their original cities.
The Knicks have actually started as a founding member (one of 10 teams) in the Basketball Association of America (BAA) – the predecessor of the NBA, June 6, 1944. In 1949, the BAA and the National Basketball League merged to form the NBA.
Name Knicks is a shortened form of Knickerbockers – a style of pants used by early Dutch settlers of the New York area in the 1600s.
The Knicks – In Brief
New York Knicks is owned by Cablevision, and play in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division of the NBA. The history of Knicks started with a victory when they beat the Toronto Huskies 68-66 in their first league game in November 1, 1946. Very early in their careers, the Knicks have won three consecutive titles in Conference 1951.1952, and 1953, a total of eight. They also have eight division titles under their belt, the Also last three consecutively, in 1992, 1993 and 1994.
The New York Knicks won two NBA championships, also in 1970 and 1973. They have reached their first NBA final season of 1950-51, but lost 79-75 to the Rochester Royals. They reached the final again two years following 1952 and 1953, but could not win. Starting from now, and right in the decade of 1960, the Knicks hit rock bottom, so to speak.
However, they resumed their winning ways at the end of the decade, won their first NBA Championship in 1970, beating the Lakers in Los Angeles before their supporters at Madison Square Garden.
The Home Of The Knicks
Madison Square Garden (MSG) – Home of the New York Knicks – is currently in his fourth avatar. The MSG opened in 1879 and was demolished 10 years later. The second MSG opened in 1890, while the third Garden opened in 1925.
When the Knicks started playing in 1946, they had the third MSG as their home. When MSG III closed during the fourth MSG opened its doors in February 1968, the Knicks moved home here. They are currently well placed to MGS IV.
