What the Black Sox scandal
Black Sox was a name given to the eight White Sox players who were involved in throwing the World Series. In 1919, the scandal that almost cost baseball integrity has occurred. This happened when some of the best players Chicago White Sox sit with baseball players to fix the World Series, losing against the Cincinnati Reds.
The scandal led to controversies Ban eight men. All those involved in the scandal would have been richer if the word on this subject does not come out. However, it was difficult of secrecy. According to research, words out because the players needed to raise large amounts of money to ensure the participation of players.
When rumors came out, it was difficult to keep everything under control.
Who was involved?
Names of players who have been involved in the scandal surfaced. Although unconfirmed speculation stressed Arnold Gandil as the brain. Some have said he has contacted a player and opened the possibility to correct it.
Other names included in the Black Sox scandal were Eddie Cicotte, Claude Williams, George Weaver, Charles Risberg, Fred McMullin, and Joe Jackson.
It was not difficult to attract other players because of the lucrative offer. This would make them all rich in an instant. However, the clarity and extent of their participation is still unclear. There were questions about the involvement of Joe Jackson, who was one of most popular actors during this period. Decades after the scandal, the Black Sox said that Jackson has never been present in any of their meetings to discuss the correction.
There was also a sad end to the career of Buck Weaver, who did not participate directly to the scandal. The others asked him to participate, but he never agreed. His only fault is to know about the fraud and did not tell the league about it.
What happened next?
After the ban, baseball has become difficult for guys. The ban was not only the league, but sport in general. The other players tried to redeem their careers. However, there have been threats that those who have something to do with them concerning the sport of baseball can forget for the rest of their lives.
It was also hard for the fans of Chicago White Sox. From a strong team, their team has become one of wimps. They even had one of the longest droughts World Series, 1917-2005. This gave birth to the Curse of the Black Sox.
It has also been a difficult time for baseball and baseball fans. Scandal has broken the trust they have for the game. It took some time before the sport gain the trust of its fans back.
The scandal of the Black Sox is probably one of the lowest points in baseball history. What began in an effort to appeal to those who want to become rich has made them easily their careers and the faith of fans on the sport.
