Travel Newfoundland: St. Johns, Newfoundland
Author: John Pelley
We perform the recognition of another place where we were told Quidi Vidi Lake in the east end of town. There number of caravans parked here ahead of next weeks race on the lake. All day, two oars man, 4 +1 and 6 +1 s s practice for the assistance coming weeks. A hiking trail path around the lake and is a popular place for residents. St. John's is known for its network of hiking trails. Runway Quidi Vidi four other branches in the rest of the city.
We took a walking tour of the eastern part of the city. This is where many rich people have built their house after many fires in the 19th century, which cleared the lower platform of the city. Many houses are in Queen Anne and late Empire style, Victorian later thrown in for good measure.
The tour took us to the colonial house, which required the legislature and the Supreme Court to the country of Newfoundland from 1850 to 1959. They moved to the Confederation Building at. The building now houses the Provincial Archives.
We crossed the street and have been invited to attend a garden party at Government House, the residence of the Lieutenant-Governor of the province. We were the delegation of the State of Illinois estimated. The Royal Regiment Foot and the 27th Company of the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Artillery were present in style. The body of drums and fife has been completed by the provincial Royal Military Band, which played during the festival. Tea, lemonade and cookies were served to all guests history of the region John Cabot before the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1917, when almost an entire generation of young Newfoundlanders were lost in one day.
At 11:00 was the tattoo, a reconstruction of military activities from 1795 traditional, performed by the Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Foot and 27th Company of the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Artillery. Composed of high school student body consists of drum and fife band, regiment of infantry and artillery regiment. They show the end of walking exercises that have been used in actual combat, the firing of guns of different formations, and the use of howitzers and cannons in the battle. The exercise was very informative and entertaining.
Talking with the historian for the group after the show, we asked the Germans and the Second World War. He said it was a possibility. Many ships were sunk in the North Atlantic and the bodies were washed ashore along the coast. Among the organs or parts of them would have been a number of boats. Since their identity was unknown to the public services and would give them a burial Christian. This is certainly a plausible explanation and yet a wonderful example of the hospitality of Newfoundland.
At 2:00 we were scheduled for a visit to Signal Hill. Then we went to GeoCenter Johnson, just down the hill. Built on the hill, the pieces are indicative of the We had to leave early because of our Tour event, but returned later than the end of exposures.
On Signal Hill, we met Billy, the hill for over an hour and a half. Signal Hill has been used for many purposes, barracks, hospitals, prisons, etc. Its main use is the signal for ships entering the port. The signal was relayed from Cape Spear, most point in eastern North America, by hoisting the ship colors. It was then observed by the merchants and citizens who are preparing for the ship. In 1901, Marconi sent and received the first transatlantic signal Wireless Europe, a series of three points. He used an antenna attached to a kite. The cable companies are not too happy with his achievement, because he had just put the transatlantic cable, at great expense. How he did it was revealed decades later, the bounce signal in the ionosphere. This communication has changed forever and helped maritime communications.
Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of the Cabot Tower in 1897, the 400th anniversary of its discovery. Another interesting fact is that the Basilica of St. John the Baptist towers align with the narrower, the port of St. John's. By lining the masts of a series of lantern tower, ships were able to navigate through the Narrows without incident. This has been done until recently, when the Narrows has been dredged to facilitate access. During the Second World War a large net was strung across the strait from Fort Amherst to Signal Hill to keep German submarines and protect shipping from St. John's. The Germans, meanwhile, had hired several captains of ships that sailed from Bell Island, a short distance. They were familiar with the waters and hazards the region. Then they were able to work around the net.

Made some necessary laundry on Merry Meeting Street and other tasks today. Merry Meeting Street was so named because it is at the top of the hill overlooking the harbor. People meet for chat and watch for ships entering port there.
We are ready to stay at Quidi Vidi Lake to watch next Thursday and the event the oldest sports in North America, the 185th consecutive St. John's Royal Regatta. From dawn to dusk, the teams were in office. We look forward to the race.
In the evening, we walked to Bannerman Park, the site of the Folk Festival in St. John's, which began today and continues throughout the weekend. Also on tap this weekend is the George Street Festival, which runs through St. John's Most of the original buildings have been destroyed due to massive fires in 1846 and 1892. The streets rise from the road by a steep hill, typical of most port cities. Atop the hill is Merry Meeting Street, where young people congregate and yet your eyes open for any vessel entering the port. Two the many ships docked in port today were a French ship luxury cruise with a passenger list of only ninety people, whose itinerary was the Arctic Circle and naturalistic sites there. The other ship was a Russian trawler in the port of engine repairs. They have been there for over a month. Knowing how Newfoundlanders on factory ships abroad destroy the Grand Banks fisheries, the vessel could be there for many months. The crew did not seem too displeased, sunbathing on deck.
Walking down George Street, residence Official Festival of Music George Street. The street is a paradise for pub crawler. Just about every establishment on the street is a pub, whose names Celtic. Food is also available, but nothing else, except for nightlife. Entered the Anglican Cathedral, outside survive the fire, but the interior is gutted. The small museum contains artifacts from fires, including key church bent, charred beams, and a church mouse mummified (really a rat). The services of the High Church variety, with Matins held before Eucharist and Vespers (Evening Prayer) Solemn Vespers daily and Sunday. They have a picture in their museum crew worked on repairs Cathedral. One man was killed during the project. Mysteriously, it appears as a translucent person in the picture. You can see the rest of the background through it: a ghostly specter. Over 50 members of the community of the Cathedral who died in World Wars are also honored a plaque near the altar.
Have crossed the English Garden park Bowring. A wedding was in progress that day. The park has many statues, including a replica of Peter Pan and one dedicated to the Fighting Newfoundlander Man. Waterfalls, and winding paths make this bucolic, a focal point for the community.
After a nap we met our friends Andrew and Pamela and visited the Festival of George Street. Most groups have been organized plant. The headliners were high Holy Days of Thunder Bay, ON and I Mother Earth, a local group making its name across National. The crowd was sparse until I Mother Earth came on stage. Of all the people came towards the spot, at least five thousand men. The singer was St. John's and he was coming home for the local hero. The music was Heavy Rock with a performance light. The audience was really into music with mosh pit. The singer even went into the pit for one of his songs and raised above. He was not afraid to get hurt because they are his friends.
After the concert, around 11:00 on 5.00 more crowded in the many pubs along the street. The party continues. The festival will continue for three nights. We intend to be there Tuesday night for the festival kitchen.
Had Ice Cream the famous Moo Moos.

We're treated to FI Ches's Famous and Chi (fish and chips). The were good but not as good as the Fisherman's Cafe Friendly's in Rose Blanche. (Luckily not as warm a serving either.)
We visited Quidi Vidi Brewery. A visit had left. We got some labels to Don, our Master Brewer of their products. At Christmas, they produce a Ale Mummers, in which they put orange rinds, cloves and other spices in the mash, giving it a special flavor. A Mummer is a British tradition during the twelve days of Christmas, where people dress in costumes and are hidden. They go from house to house to have their mugs filled after entertainment and Guests try to guess their identity in Philadelphia, PA mummers parade is an annual event on New Years Day.
Low the road is the Quidi Vidi Battery, built by the French when they attacked St. John's during the Seven Days. It is very small, but protects effectively Cove Quidi Vidi an attack by the SEA.
The path traversed Virginia River, two miles in each direction. The Trail is parallel to the river as Virginia cascades down from the hill on which Fort Pepperrell was built in the Second World War for Americans. Now, it is called Pleasantville. A Texan has designed the box and left its mark: the streets form the outline of a ten-gallon hat and names like Churchill and Roosevelt.
We headed for St. George. Tonight we went Screeched, ie.become honorary Newfoundlanders. Screech is what is done after drinking the dregs of rum from molasses spill in the old days. After a month here we feel the blood coursing from the island through our veins. At the museum Trapper John's Pub and we were well yelled drinking Screech (rum Newfoundland right, embraced the puffins, or cod, and repeated the promise.
Now we can enjoy the cuisine of the Party. A kitchen party is a tradition of Newfoundland where everything is allowed, as in the kitchen at home. Tonight was Newfoundland and Celtic night. Some groups were Banshee six Royal Newfoundland police, and Celts, where the men wore kilts and violinist girl wearing pants. It really began to enter the music halfway through the set. Then came the Mariners, who have already heard. The headliners were Shanneyganock, which had the audience in the spotlight with their Newfie and Celtic songs and upbeat tempos of the violinist, drummer, bass and rhythm guitar and squeeze box player. More people were at the kitchen party that at the concert Saturday.

Today is a beautiful sunny day for the functioning of the 185th consecutive Regatta St. John's. It is the only festival large conducted between a prison and a cemetery. The shells, ie, boats, former British fixed seats, unlike Olympic shells where the move goes down with his legs. There are twenty-three qualifying events, rowing men one kilometers 2450 course turning around a buoy and then back to the finish line. Most do it in less than ten minutes. Women do half the course in under six minutes. This year, OZ FM, a local radio station the female crew won again. They set a new course record under 5:00 minutes. Newfoundland Power won the men's competition.
The competition is not just about race. It is a festival. A minimum 50,000 people gathered around the pond, visiting the concession booths, eating their way along the trail and wait for children to play on the various rides. The atmosphere was one of joy. Bands played, the crowd stood or sat on the banks applaud their favorite teams, tailgate parties have been established including dinners jitter. Dinner A template is like a dinner toast to New England. It consists of beef or salt pork, and various vegetables are thrown into the pot, make a good stew.

Woke this morning and most of the parking area was cleared, a different view of yesterday. We will move as having enjoyed our stay St. John's. Will we return? The answer is "Yes," someday, and this time in less than 40 years.
