How to navigate through the meeting of East and West.
It's new, exciting, captivating, intriguing and some even a little sexy. It took the world's attention and strongly positioned itself as the new frontier in business.
It is China.
For over ten years I have traveled back to Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taiwan, and each year it becomes more and more advanced business and flair in the way the Western world. And the interesting thing is that we in the Western world now, essentially, do not withdraw.
Via the many contacts I have established throughout China, it always amazes me when they say the business just how much Australia New Zealand and in particular the USA think they can simply skip a flight, present themselves, establish a shingle and succeed on the basis of pure that China is booming and there are one billion people willing to buy their product or service. And I'm here to tell you, it does not.
A simple case study is a gentleman I know who has a string of successful bars and restaurants, an expatriate who has 'done good' to the east. At first glance, given the meteoric rise and success of his business during the past 3 years, it seems that he arrived yesterday, opened the door and BOOM, came money. The truth is that it has been for 15 years, chipping away at the market and has valuable as lessons on how to do business in China. And here are some tips to win, he shared with me over lunch on a recent visit.
1. Learn the language – China has a range of dialects, and it depends on which side of the street you live (literally) on which one them as you speak. You can be surrounded by locals speaking Mandarin, walk two blocks, and suddenly, it's Cantonese. If you to do business, serious business, then the easiest way not to be caught short, is to understand what is being said around you at meetings.
2. Find a local that you can trust – this one does not happen overnight. Chinese are usually guarded, cautious of strangers and non-confidence of someone who does not grow there. But if you want the 'in' with local government officials and business people seriously, then you'll need some local heavyweights to help you open certain doors.
3. Ten years too late – those on the ground China will say, "You should have been here ten years ago, you're too late." And part of what is true, expatriates who have put in their time are indeed ahead of "Johnny Come Lately." And if you think of heading there now, you can expect that you enter in an already very competitive and a market that is just as difficult to find a market position as others in the world.
4. Pick a number and triple — all expats I spoke he will tell you, time alone is key to their success. And all they had budgeted for in respect development time in China, they were all out of their estimates.
5. Be present – we saw a number of Australian companies happen in China, including Shanghai and do well, but those with the best are those that have set up camp in the town and showed they mean business, serious business. So many companies are trying an approach to China than to withdraw with their tails between their legs, months and years later, as they assumed the country thinking they can come and go as they please. The Chinese know, and they mock him.
6. The People do not mean profits – Just because there are hundreds of millions of people crammed into a relatively small space does that they are all consumers of your product or service. You still need to test the market for the real business of who is your target, and to understand whether there are enough of them there to support your business model and buy your product or service.
For over a decade Now, we were intrigued by the country, and for over a decade, we were scratching our heads about how it responds really and what are the essential things that make ticks. And whist the world brings about changes in China and through growth and the opportunities it offers experienced business consultants are ready with one foot firmly planted on the accelerator, one hand on the handbrake and the other on the wheel as we try to navigate our way towards roadblocks around and always ready to take on the brakes to avoid an accident is imminent.
