It is often difficult to compare the legendary players of Major League Baseball in that by comparisons based on statistics, the emphasis put in general falls on pure performance on the field. It also tends to reflect the fact that these figures have been successful teams and how the success of individual players has strengthened a team to championship levels. The other players, regardless of individual successfully are too often seen in another competitor status because of the perception that their effort never was enough to allow the team to mount on a championship podium. Baseball is a team sport, yet a team sport loosely based on individual effort. Looking past the numbers to the intangibles of attitude and enthusiasm for the game, the greatness of a player can not simply be judged on statistics. Ernie Banks is one such player in MLB history.
Ernie Banks was one of the greatest players, coaches and personalities Don never Uniform Cubs. Regarded by many as the most popular player ever, Banks was known for being a nice boy. It was easy going and was a friend to everyone he knew. Some sources say it comes from the phrase "I never met a man I did not like. "Banks was quiet and modest. He left his bat and his glove do the talking for him. He had an enthusiasm endless game of baseball. As the legend goes, after the Cubs finished get trampled twice in a doubleheader, Ernie Banks would have suggested, "let's play three. On many occasions, the bank was quoted as saying: "What a beautiful day for a baseball game. Let's play two! "Any photo Ernie Banks of his days playing radiates joy he had playing the game of baseball. There are none that are not that contagious grin he became famous. It was so popular, in fact, he became known as Mr. Cub. Several sources attribute the never say die and "baseball is a pleasure "attitude of the Cubs organization directly to Ernie Banks.
Even if the Chicago Cubs last World Series triumph was in 1908 and his last appearance in the World Series in 1945 (which they tragically lost in a seventh game), there is still no team more hope and inspiration in the MLB that "lovable losers from Chicago." Hope springs eternal, as they say, and after nearly 100 years, "eternal" begins to live up to its reputation of being a very, very long time.
The Cubs woes were compounded over the years. They produced a twenty-year stretch (1947-1967) to finish in the bottom half of their division for the regular season, in part at the time Ernie Banks. Yet each new season brings with it the possibility of going to the World Series and finally break the curse "Billy Goat" curse on the Wrigley Field and the Cubs during the fifth game of the World Series in 1945. As said, a local Chicago bar owner attended the match and was allowed entry in somewhat unusual circumstances. When the order to leave Wrigley Field to get his goat with him, would have a "nauseating Goat, Billy Siani 'curse has been issued to the effect that the World Series would never be played within Wrigley Field.
As the myth surrounding the validity of the curse grows with each passing off-season contention, it has a comfortable and simple life in baseball, the sport that prefers urban myth, legend and superstition with logic. In 2003, the curse was almost broken when the Cubs matched at Atlanta Braves in the Division Series National League. With a 3-game lead in 2 of the series and winning Game 6 at 3-0 in the top of the eighth inning against the Florida Marlins, the "goat curse" spread once again. The Cubs lost Game 6 and then finally lost the first part 7, which means no chance for a World Series game to be played at Wrigley Field. The Marlins have to win the World Series in 2003.
Ernie Banks never had the opportunity to play in the championship series of the league, the World Series, or any other game post-season. He did, however, are proud of him and his ball club through regular League in several areas. Banks was an All-Star every season from 1955 to 1962. He also made the all-stars split in 1965, 1967 and 1969. Setting an early standard for future Iron Men, banks have played in 424 consecutive games from the day he became a teddy bear, a record at the time. His longest consecutive game streak stands at 717. He hit 40 homeruns in 1955, a record for MLB Shortstop, and led the National League circuit in 1958 with 47 over-the-blast fence. Banks hit 5 grand slams in 1955 and has topped 100 RBIs. He received the NL Most Valuable Player in 1958 and again in 1959. Staggering achievement if one takes into account the fact that the Cubs are nowhere near being competing to win the division pennant. His 1959 MVP season boasted 45 homeruns and led the league with 143 RBIs. Ernie Banks won the NL Golden Glove Award at shortstop in 1960, and had the fewest errors in the MLB. He also led the National League in homers and RBIs this year.
During his career, Ernie Banks became the Cub of all time leader in:
* Games played (2,528)
* Attendance at bat (9421)
* Total bases (4,706)
* Home runs (512)
The banks have also set numerous records NL, came into the MLB Hall of Fame in 1977 and his number 14 was the first to be retired by the Cubs. When you've finished playing in 1971, he continued training with the Cubs. In May 1973, when Cubs manager Whitey Lockman was ejected for arguing a call, run banks in the rest of the match. It was technically the first African American to manage Major League Baseball.
Infused into the heart of every Cub fan (and there are many) is the spirit and exuberance and love for the game of baseball has been played by Ernie Banks. He brought a lot more than just beautiful and good performance statistics of the game. He did so with vigor, zest and ability to appreciate the game that has irretrievably infected Cub fans everywhere on the planet.
